چکیده

This chapter will provide a comprehensive review of post-infectious glomerulonephritis focusing in particular on the changing epidemiology and long term outcome. The immunological response of the kidney to an insult results in glomerulonephritis. The insult can result from a large number of conditions, both infectious and non-infectious. Regardless of the initial insult, the outcome is similar in terms of pathology and clinical symptoms. The most common and most-studied cause is post streptococcal Glomerulonephritis (PSGN). A list of causes is presented in Table 1.

DISEASE OF THE MONTH IgA Nephropathy: Recent Developments

IgA nephropathy (IgAN), a mesangial proliferative glomerulonephritis (GN), is the most common GN in all parts of the world where renal biopsy is widely practiced. It is unique among glomerular diseases in being defined by immunohistochemical findings, i.e., mesangial deposition of IgA, rather than by light microscopy. Because the clinical features of IgAN were discussed in 1997 (1), we focus on...

Pulmonary renal syndrome in childhood: a report of twenty-one cases and a review of the literature.

In adults, the term specific pulmonary renal syndrome describes disorders with pulmonary and glomerular manifestations and includes Wegener's granulomatosis, Goodpasture disease, and systemic lupus erythematosus. Nonspecific pulmonary renal syndrome refers to either pulmonary disease complicating glomerular disease, or glomerular diseases following pulmonary disease. Since little is known regar...

An overview on frequency of renal biopsy diagnosis in Brazil: clinical and pathological patterns based on 9,617 native kidney biopsies.

BACKGROUND Studies about the prevalence of renal and particularly glomerular diseases in Brazil are still scarce. METHODS We evaluated retrospectively the reports of 9,617 renal biopsies, analyzed by the same pathologist, from January 1993 to December 2007. RESULTS The 9,617 renal biopsies performed in subjects of all ages in native kidneys. 4,619 were primary glomerulopathies (GN), the mos...

Immunological Mechanisms and Clinical Aspects in Pulmonary-Renal Syndrome: A Review

McGraw-Hill Concise Dictionary of Modern Medicine [1] defines pulmonary-renal syndrome (PRS) as an idiopathic condition characterized by pulmonary hemorrhage, rapid progressive glomerulonephritis, and positive autoantibodies. Pulmonary-renal syndrome may be also defined as a heterogeneous group of multisystem diseases – e.g. Goodpasture syndrome, Wegener's granulomatosis, collagen vascular dise...

Proliferative Nephritis of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus

Received for publication 14 August 1981 and in revised form 16 November 1981. membranous GN, membranoproliferative GN types I and II, mesangial GN with IgA or C3 deposition and Henoch Sch6nlein's purpura. Loss of C3b receptor antigen in the diffuse proliferative nephritis of SLE distinguishes it both from nonproliferative lupus nephritis and other immunologically mediated proliferative GN.
